ɫҹ University’s Center for Adult and Veteran Services (CAVS) has been selected as the outstanding undergraduate program for adult learners by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), a leading professional association in student affairs.
In a Feb. 3, 2020, letter to President Todd Diacon, NASPA announced that the CAVS program is the Annual Outstanding Undergraduate Adult Learning Program recipient.
CAVS was selected for the honor by the Adult Learners and Students with Children NASPA Knowledge Community, a group within NASPA.
“We feel that CAVS exemplifies how to support a growing student population that often requires a unique type of assistance,” wrote Martha Harper, chair of NASPA’s Adult Learners and Students with Children Knowledge Community.
The CAVS program was selected because it incorporates the four guiding principles of NASPA:
-
Integrity
-
Innovation
-
Inclusion
-
Inquiry.
“The hard work taking place in CAVS, is key to adult student retention,” Harper wrote. “We also appreciate the role of your Interim Dean of Students, Talea Drummer-Ferrell, Ph.D., in providing the structure the CAVS staff needs to do their crucial work. The collaborative effort across divisions and units is a ‘best’ example of combining resources from a variety of stakeholders to provide a network of success for students and greater retention for ɫҹ.”
Joshua Rider, interim assistant dean of students and his colleagues, Sarah Helmick, associate director and VA certifying official, Scott Crawford, program coordinator and VA certifying official and Lanika Mutsach, graduate assistant, will be honored at an open reception on March 31, 2020, in Austin, Texas, where a formal award presentation will be held.
