WKSU Reflects on Past Year

The year 2020 presented many challenges requiring major changes and adjustments for organizations everywhere. Instead of going the traditional route with an annual report for 2020, WKSU explored this past year with “2020: A Year in Review,” celebrating its 70th anniversary, highlighting its adjustments due to the COVID-19 pandemic and covering major historical events.

In her letter to kick off the review, General Manager Wendy Turner acknowledged the challenges the radio station faced throughout the year and expressed her gratitude for the station’s supporters.

“Every one of us has been pressed hard by the events of this year. We have been asked to sacrifice, be patient, look after each other, educate ourselves, and grapple with unrelenting uncertainty,” Turner said. “Through this frame, we are so humbled and immensely grateful for the continued support from our community.”

The review reflects upon how WKSU managed reporting and remote work during the pandemic, provided accurate information as hunger for information related to coronavirus grew, covered the May 4, 1970, anniversary, developed new newsletters to reach audiences as listener preferences changed, and focused on big reporting efforts and projects like Informed Communities, a collaborative effort between WKSU, The Plain Dealer and Spectrum News focusing on topics like infant mortality rates and evictions in hopes of reaching those in underserved communities.
