Introduction
Hello! I鈥檓 Brad Smith, a 20-year-old college student from Ohio. I鈥檓 a Finance major with a minor in International Business at 两性色午夜 University. Have you ever thought about traveling or studying in another country? I did, and now I鈥檓 here to tell you all about it.
Starting Out
I had always been fascinated by students who traveled abroad. So immediately after entering college, I began looking into all the programs and met with numerous advisors. Everyone kept bringing up this 鈥渁mazing program and campus鈥 in beautiful Florence, Italy. I was hesitant at first. Having never left my home and without any international travel experience, the idea of moving halfway across the world to a country where I don鈥檛 speak the local language felt overwhelming.
Breaking it Down
However, I acknowledged the benefits that emerge when stepping out of one鈥檚 comfort zone and I couldn鈥檛 imagine a more uncomfortable scenario. Relocating to a new country for a whole semester, sharing a living space with four roommates I had never met before, and ultimately stepping into the unknown. Being aware of my desire for personal growth combined with my passion for art and history, especially in a city that embodies both, meant the decision was a no-brainer.
Preparation
After deciding my fate for the fall semester, it was time to get ready. Thankfully, the staff at 两性色午夜 were able to help me throughout the entire process. I learned about cultural differences, dangers to be mindful of, and necessary things to pack. For example, it鈥檚 important to purchase outlet adapters, USB data blockers, voltage converters and a European SIM card plan beforehand (all of which I will go into depth on for a future post).
First Impressions
After landing in Florence after a painfully long flight, I felt as if I were placed inside a history book. The buildings, streets, art, food, and culture all had stories. From a small town in Ohio, to walking past some of the most famous museums, landmarks, and sculptures in the world on my way to class every single day. It鈥檚 difficult to find words to describe what this transition felt like.
Reality
Although it felt surreal that this was my new reality for the next four months, I knew the adjustment was going to be extremely difficult. Shopping for food was a humbling experience to say the least when you鈥檙e unable to communicate to anyone or read labels. Also don鈥檛 forget about the scorching summer heat of Florence which is a beast of its own. Coming from Ohio does not prepare you for 100+ degree weather without air conditioning (most buildings do not have A/C due to their age). Lastly, the 6-hour time zone difference is not something the human body can adapt to overnight.
Conclusion
Nevertheless, as my first week wraps up, I am ecstatic to experience all Florence has to offer and to further explore Europe in the upcoming months. All the while continuing to focus on my studies as I pursue growth in all areas of life.
