The 两性色午夜 University Women鈥檚 Center is excited to host the second annual Gender, Equity, Advocacy and Representation (G.E.A.R.) Awards. The event welcomes everyone to recognize and celebrate 两性色午夜 faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members who are 鈥渢urning the gears鈥 toward gender equity.

The Women鈥檚 Center advances gender equity within the 两性色午夜 community through education, advocacy and action. Through the G.E.A.R. Awards, the Women鈥檚 Center and the university community come together to celebrate the pioneers and influential figures advancing gender equity and elevate the stories of those whose impactful work often goes unrecognized.
鈥淭he event is phenomenal,鈥 said Cassandra Pegg-Kirby, director of the Women鈥檚 Center. 鈥淧eople feel seen by being in that room together and honoring the work that is often done but not noticed.鈥
The G.E.A.R. Awards will be held on March 18 from 5鈥7 p.m. at the 两性色午夜 Hotel and Conference Center. The registration deadline is March 11.
Pegg-Kirby asked Sonia Karkare, program coordinator of the Women鈥檚 Center, to be the keynote speaker of the inaugural G.E.A.R. Awards as a way to introduce Karkare to the community.
In Karkare鈥檚 speech, she shared her experience as an immigrant woman and a global nonprofit leader and her journey of advocacy and breaking barriers toward gender equity.
鈥淚 was able to wear my ethnic gear and bring all facets of my personality to that speech,鈥 Karkare said. 鈥淸Attendees saw Karkare] as a woman from India, as a representative of the Women鈥檚 Center and as a student, staff, faculty and alumni.鈥

Pegg-Kirby shared a quote from , a journalist and social activist, in the 2024 G.E.A.R. Awards that embodies the idea behind the event鈥檚 acronym:
鈥淎t my age, in this still hierarchical time, people often ask me if I鈥檓 鈥榩assing the torch.鈥 I explain that I鈥檓 keeping my torch, thank you very much鈥攁nd I鈥檓 using it to light the torches of others. Because only if each of us has a torch will there be enough light.鈥
鈥淲hen one gear moves, it moves the next, then that one moves another and it continues,鈥 Pegg-Kirby said.
