Outline of the two-year program

Two important notes about the two-year MAT program

  1. The final two semesters (Fall II and Spring II) require availability during daytime school hours.
  2. If you are seeking federal financial aid for the MAT program, any undergraduate content courses carried into the MAT two-year program are excluded from financial aid eligibility. We do NOT recommend applying to the MAT two-year program if you are seeking financial aid.

Outline of the one-year program

Note: All content coursework must be completed before the start of master's classes.

Summer consists of 13 graduate hours. This coursework prepares students in the background in educational foundations, educational psychology, and general methods required to be successful in the classroom. In addition, up to 30 hours of field experiences in school settings will occur.

Secondary Education - M.A.T.

The Master of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Education program is designed for individuals who are passionate about teaching and inspiring the next generation of students. With a focus on hands-on experiences, you'll gain the skills needed to develop engaging lesson plans, manage classroom dynamics and facilitate student learning.

The Master of Arts in Teaching degree in Secondary Education serves individuals who have never held a teaching certificate or license.

There are two options of study:

  1. 11-month option, which requires full-time study beginning the summer of the year admitted and continuing throughout the academic year
  2. two-year option, which allows for part-time enrollment

Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum 2.750 undergraduate GPA on a 4.000-point scale
  • Official transcript(s)

  • Essay (1,000 words) explaining desire to teach
  • Questions in Anticipation of Licensure form
  • Content evaluation (to be completed before applying)

  • English language proficiency - all international students must provide proof of English language proficiency (unless they meet specific exceptions to waive) by earning one of the following:1
    • Minimum 79 TOEFL iBT score

Program Information for Integrated Language Arts Additional Licensure Preparation - Non-Degree

Program Description

Full Description

The Integrated Language Arts Additional Licensure Preparation non-degree program prepares students to obtain an additional teacher license in integrated language arts (reading, writing, speaking and listening) for grades 7-12. Completion of the coursework is a prerequisite to being recommended by Á½ÐÔÉ«ÎçÒ¹ University for licensure, which is granted by the Ohio Department of Education. This non-degree program cannot be used for students seeking initial licensure.

This program does not culminate in a master's degree. Students interested in a master's degree at Á½ÐÔÉ«ÎçÒ¹ must be fully admitted into and complete the requirements for the master's program, in addition to courses that are prescribed here for additional licensure.

  • Minimum 2.750 overall undergraduate GPA on a 4.000-point scale

  • Questions in Anticipation of Licensure Form
  • Evidence of valid Resident Educator or Professional State of Ohio teaching license

Minimum 2.600 content area GPA is required for the Adolescence to Young Adult 7-12 licensure.

  • Additional Coursework: An analysis of additional content-area coursework required at the post-undergraduate level will be completed before entering into the program, and a Plan of Study will be created based on transcript analysis and current licensure requirements by the Ohio Department of Education. A minimum C grade is required in each of these courses. This coursework would be in addition to requirements for the Integrated Language Arts non-degree program.
