What is Academic Advantage?

Academic Advantage is an educational experience focused on Career Exploration, Success Coaching and Academic Coursework. The program is designed to assist underrepresented students in their goal to graduate on time and prepare for a future career by building a support network of peers and professional staff.

What’s New with Academic Advantage 2021?

Academic Advantage, formerly known as Summer Advantage, will be offered in the Spring! Students who register and enroll in a 1-2 credit leadership or student development course such as the Peer Leader Training course, Success Seminar, Career Navigation, etc. can apply to Academic Advantage. The program benefits include:

  • Book and Course Supply Assistance up to $500
  • Leadership and Professional Development
  • Career Exploration Workshops
  • Cultural and Service-Learning Activities
  • Peer-to-Peer Connections

What are the dates of the program?

Program Dates: January 19, 2021 – April 9, 2021. *The program will begin the first week of classes and end the week before spring break. Students must attend orientation before the program start date (dates will be provided to those accepted into the program).

Who Can Apply?

Undergraduate underrepresented students who are registered for a 1-2 credit student development course are encouraged to apply! *Á½ÐÔÉ«ÎçÒ¹ University defines an underrepresented student as someone who is African American, Latinx American, Native American, or Biracial/Multiracial American.

Is there a cost to participate in Academic Advantage?

No! Students receive book or course supply assistance, if needed, to help with spring semester expenses.

Should I Meet with My Academic Advisor Before Registering for Academic Advantage?

Yes. Students should meet with their academic advisor before registering for spring courses to ensure the 1-2 credit course selected fits within their academic plan and allows them to remain on track to graduation according to their major.

Can I participate online?

Yes, students enrolled in online courses can participate in Academic Advantage. Students will have the option to participate in remote or in-person small groups.

What is the time commitment?

This is a ten-week experience comprised of academic support and skill building. Students are expected to commit to participating for the full ten-week experience in the following ways: weekly professional development workshops, peer leader check-ins, academic support connections, and Spring semester service learning and cultural activities.

What is the Application Process?

Students must apply to be considered for the program. Applying does not guarantee you a place in the program. Students selected to participate demonstrate the most need and interest for the program based on application materials, academic performance, major and college, graduation date, first generation status, financial need according to FAFSA.
