Quick Tip: Handling Late Submissions in the Canvas Gradebook

POSTED: Feb. 07, 2025

Do you get emails from students that need you to re-open something?  It can be frustrating because it creates more work for you.  Canvas can help you accept that work with an automatic deduction.  This week, we will show you how you can utilize the automatic deduction option instead of using the “Available until” setting.

Quick Tip: Handling Late Submissions in the Canvas Gradebook

The university is currently promoting the belonging culture.  One strategy to help a student feel they belong is to understand that they have barriers when it comes to meeting deadlines. Rather than giving zeroes, we can accept late work with a penalty.

How to enable the Automatically apply deduction to late submissions setting

  1. Navigate to the Gradebook in your Canvas course.

  2. Click the Settings button (gear icon) in the top right corner.  A panel will pop out.

  3. On the Late Policy tab, select the checkbox to “Automatically apply deduction to late submissions.” Enter the percentage you want deducted and if you want the deduction to occur daily or hourly.  Then you need to decide at what point you will stop deducting points.  The failing percentage in your course is typically placed here. Then click the Apply Settings button to save.

Keep in mind: Since it’s the due date that determines how late the assignment is, you will want to make sure each assessment in your course has an accurate due date and time set.
