With its latest fifth-place finish in the national Hearst Multimedia News Competition, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) at ɫҹ University is tied for fifth place in the overall multimedia rankings to date, with final intercollegiate winners to be named in April. This is the highest ranking that JMC has achieved in the six years that Hearst has offered the Intercollegiate Multimedia Competition.
Matthew Jarchow, a junior news major, earned fifth place in the Enterprise Reporting category for his story “Youngstown’s Remarkable Concussion Statistic.” The story was written as part of the Computer-Assisted Reporting class concussion project, which explored concussion policies and tracking practices in Ohio high schools. Jarchow will receive a $1,000 scholarship for his work.
The Hearst Journalism Program consists of five monthly writing competitions, two photojournalism competitions, one radio and two TV broadcast news competitions and four multimedia competitions, with Championship finals in all divisions. The Program awards up to $500,000 in scholarships and grants annually.
