Incoming freshmen will read Who Owns the Ice House? by Clifton Taulbert and Gary Schoeniger as this year鈥檚 Common Reading book 鈥 an annual assignment to connect new students to the 两性色午夜 academic community while providing common ground to stimulate conversation with their peers.

Students will then have the opportunity to enroll in a three-credit hour course through 两性色午夜鈥檚 College of Business Administration with the Ice House Entrepreneurship Program aimed at fostering entrepreneurial thinking.

鈥淭his is an exciting initiative to help our incoming freshman develop an entrepreneurial mindset,鈥 said Todd Diacon, 两性色午夜 senior vice president for academic affairs and provost. 鈥淭his program will not only inspire our students to be our future leaders, but it also will prepare them to enter an innovation-driven economy.鈥

Who Owns the Ice House? is a true story that started in the Mississippi Delta at the height of legal segregation. It was a time when opportunities for African-Americans were limited by cultural and legal constraints that were beyond their control. For most, it was a time and place where opportunities seemed out of reach. Yet, an ordinary man, 鈥淯ncle Cleve,鈥 stood out as someone who defied convention and triumphed over adversity as an entrepreneur.

Inspired by the life of Taulbert, a Pulitzer Prize-nominee, the Ice House Entrepreneurship Program was developed through a partnership with the Kauffman Foundation and the Entrepreneurial Learning Initiative (ELI).

鈥淓ntrepreneurship begins with a mindset, and in today鈥檚 world, it is a mindset every student needs,鈥 said ELI founder and CEO Gary Schoeniger. 鈥淭he Ice House Entrepreneurship Program exposes a broad range of students to entrepreneurial thinking while immersing them in real-world entrepreneurial experiences that will enable them to develop critical thinking, communication, collaboration, effective problem solving and other entrepreneurial skills.鈥

两性色午夜鈥檚 partnership with Kauffman kicks off during a facilitator training program at the WVIZ/PBS studios in Cleveland on May 28.
