Theatre & Social Change / Medievalism in Czechia

Students on this faculty-led program are able to take either a Theatre or English course in the Czech Republic for a month over the summer. The Theatre course will explore the relationship between theatre and society through the lens of Central Europe's post-Communist transition. The English course will explore the ways that medieval Europe exists today, particularly Czech medievalism. We will be particularly examining the ways that European medievalism exists and is shared between the Czech Republic and England.

Program Highlights

On this program, you will choose one of two courses:

Theatre: Students will attend shows at the National Theatre, National Marionette Theatre, Theatre on the Balustrade, Prague Fringe Festival, and the famous Laterna Magika.  All show tickets are included, and there are possible excursions to Medieval Cesky Krumlov, nearby European cities, and the Terezin Concentration Camp.

English: Like the folks in The Canterbury Tales, each student is a pilgrim on a journey鈥攐nly, instead of traveling to Canterbury in the Middle Ages, each student is traveling to Prague in the 21st Century. Assignments include a scavenger hunt. Projects include contributing observations, stories, photographs, and video to an online travel blog with the ultimate goal of collectively creating a short documentary film about Czech medievalism.

Payment Deadline: The remainder of the program fee will be billed to your 两性色午夜 student account. The program fee deadline will be in accordance with the Financial, Billing and Enrollment Center's Summer 2025 payment due dates. You should refer to the first Summer 2025 due date.

Application Process

You will need to complete a 两性色午夜 Education Abroad application. These quick steps will help walk you through the process.

1. Start an Education Abroad Application

When you click the "Apply Now" button (located towards the top and bottom of this page), you will be brought to the Education Abroad application system where you can view program costs and start an application. Be sure to submit your application before the deadline!

2. Guest Application (If applicable)

Are you a student at another university? To apply for a 两性色午夜 education abroad program, you will first need to apply for admission to 两性色午夜 University as a 鈥Guest Student鈥. Please apply as either an 鈥淯ndergraduate Guest Student鈥 or as a 鈥淕raduate Guest Student鈥, depending on your course level.

Once you have applied and been accepted as a 两性色午夜 University student, you will receive an email with your FlashLine login credentials. Activate your account and then proceed to the next step, which is to apply to the Education Abroad program of your interest. You can return to this page and follow the 鈥淎pply Now鈥 button to start that application.

3. Wait for Acceptance

Once you have submitted your study abroad program application, it will be reviewed by the faculty leader. Applications are evaluated on a rolling basis. You should hear back from us within one month.

4. Commit to the Program

If you are accepted, you need to log back into your application by going to and clicking LOGIN. Once you see the name of your program, you need to click on it and commit (i.e., accept your offer of admission).

    • Course Description: Using a combination of in-depth research and direct learning experiences, this course explores the intersection between theatre and socio-political change through the example of Czechoslovakia鈥檚 history from the 1968 Prague Spring to the Velvet Revolution of 1989/90 and on through today鈥檚 concerns of Western late-stage capitalism. Students study both historical and contemporary texts, as well as view productions while on a study abroad program.
  • Course Name: ENG 40089 International Experience: Themes in Study Abroad
    • Number of Credit Hours: 3
    • KSU Sponsoring College: Trumbull Campus / College of Arts & Sciences
    • Course Description: This course invites students to explore English themes while traveling abroad. Students learn about the course material within a particular/relevant geographic/cultural setting. Course lectures and discussion prior to the class trip prepare students to situate the material within the geographic/cultural context, thus prompting students to be critically engaged during the travel dates. After the study abroad portion of the course, students are required to evaluate the course material/travel via a final project that draws connections between both.

Please note: Instructional days for the THEA course will include attendance at shows in various theatres in the evening, to be established as theatres publish their seasons. Students in the ENG course are welcome to join as well, but not otherwise required to attend. ENG Instructional days will involve vlogging and exploration.

Location & Transportation

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague was once a capital of the Holy Roman Empire, then a significant outpost of the Hapsburg Empire. A center of the Protestant Reformation, as well as the rise and fall of Communism, Prague has long sat at the crossroads of Europe.

Nearby sites include the Sedlec Ossuary at Kutna Hora, Terezin Concentration Camp, and the medieval village at Cesky Krumlov.

Prague also sits very close to other major cities and offers easy access to the likes of Vienna, Munich, Berlin, Zagreb, Krakow, and others via air and rail.

Boasting a vibrant and exciting theatre scene, Prague has long been at the forefront of artistic developments.  From being among the first to experiment with interactive multimedia, to Prague's signature "Black Light Theatre" style, the city and its artistic community has a reputation for ground-breaking experiments with form and style.

Transportation

Students will be provided a transit pass for the Prague metro/bus/streetcar system.  Students are responsible for their own airfare and transit outside of the city.

Airports

We recommend using Vaclav Havel Airport, which is the only airport that serves Prague.

Housing & Meals

Accommodations

Student accommodation will consist of dormitory living in the facilities of the Technical University of Prague. Lunch is provided at Anglo-American University on instructional days.

Meals

Students will be responsible for most meals. Lunches are provided on instructional days.

Health & Safety

Pre-Departure Orientation

Prior to your study abroad experience, you will participate in a mandatory pre-departure orientation hosted by the Office of Global Education. During this orientation, you will be provided with information including but not limited to:

  • international travel procedures;
  • in-country resources;
  • health and safety resources and information;
  • culture shock and resources to help prepare for living abroad.

All students are encouraged to register with the prior to departure.

In addition, we encourage you to visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) travel page for for traveling to your destination(s).

If vaccinations or medications are needed according to the CDC, you should make arrangements for appointments with your healthcare provider or the DeWeese Health Center as soon as possible. Appointment openings at the DeWeese Health Center are limited and vaccines may need to be ordered, which takes time. Please note that not all immunizations are available at the DeWeese Health Center.
