Course Description: Learn the principles and practice of designing and delivering effective study abroad programs in Morocco. Participants in this course meet with cultural drivers of business, policy, and human development in Morocco, will study the principles of developing study abroad experiences, meet with university program officials, faculty, facility support staff, as well as private third-party providers of study abroad, community and onsite support services such as legal advisors, health professionals, and housing offices. Students spend time visiting sites of historical and cultural significance in and around Morocco.

This program is designed to take place over Spring Break.

Below is a tentative itinerary; however, the exact sequence and sites are subject to changes in availability and cost.

DAY 1

• Arrive at Marrakech Airport
• Welcome dinner

DAY 2

• Marrakech City Tour
  • The city tour will take you to some of the great sites of Marrakech including the Jewish Quarter, the Bahia Palace, and the Saadian Tombs. The Bahia Palace (palace of the beautiful, the brilliant) is a nineteenth century palace of eight hectares located in Marrakesh. It is one of the masterpieces of Moroccan architecture. The palace is made up of about 150 richly decorated pieces of moucharabieh (carved wood latticework), marble, carvings and paintings on beech and cedar wood, stucco, zellige (mosaic tilework), the first stained glass windows of the Maghreb (Northern Africa), and more! The palace also features refreshing green courtyards & gardens planted with orange, banana, cypress, hibiscus, and jasmine trees and irrigated by khettaras. The Saadian Tombs were built in the 16th century as a mausoleum to bury numerous sultans. The best-known room exemplifies Islamic architecture with floral motifs, calligraphy, zellij, and Carrera marble

DAY 3

• Cadi Ayyad University - meet with cultural drivers of business, policy, and human development in Morocco

DAY 4

• Desert Tour:
  • The Agafay desert is located about 1 hour drive from Marrakech and covers several hundred hectares. For several years, it has become the place to be if you come to Marrakech. The landscapes are impressive with rock dunes (not sand dunes!) and a breathtaking view of the mountains during the winter. Enjoy an unforgettable camel ride and discover the most beautiful landscapes of the Agafay desert. You will be accompanied by a guide who will lead you during the ride. You will have the right to the traditional tea break after the 1 hour ride.

DAY 5

• Yves Saint Laurent Museum
  • The Yves Saint Laurent Museum in Marrakech is a museum dedicated to the fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent located in Marrakesh, Morocco.
  • Travel to Tangier

DAY 6

• SIST British Education Morocco - meet with senior communications manager for a tour of the SIST campus along with a workshop with SIST lecturer on economy. Gain insight into their regional center for investment.
• Panoramic Tour of Tangier
  • Stroll the streets of « the White »Tangier, they are lined with lime-coated houses. Just like Delacroix or Matisse did upon arrival, let yourself be carried away by the dreamy atmosphere that covers the city. At the foot of the high walls of the "Kasbah", roam through the alleys of the great "Socco", and admire the fortress that dominates the medina. A little far away, explore the "Sultan's Palace" which is nowadays dedicated to the arts of Morocco.

DAY 7

• Chefchaouen
  • Built on a mountainside, Chefchaouen is a city with a special vibes. Its unique charm gives an impression of unreality. With its blue-rinsed houses, the whole city seems to be bathed in azure. More than just an ornament, the beautiful Chefchaouen brims with attractions. Its heritage is rich. The inescapable Medina with its famous narrow winding alleys, is an opportunity to mingle with the local population, and to smell and taste delights: from freshly baked bread, to skillfully prepared tagines. There is also the Kasbah which stands in the middle of the old quarter: its lush gardens, located in the center of the city, are a haven of freshness.
  • Cooking Class
    • Discover Moroccan culture through a hands-on cooking class and learn recipes that you can recreate at home. Use local ingredients to make regional specialties then enjoy them for dinner.

DAY 8

• Depart from Tangier Airport

Marrakech, Tangier, and Chefchaouen, Morocco

Marrakech, the vibrant city of luxury, is located at the heart of Morocco. It is known for its bustling souks (traditional marketplaces), historic palaces, and lively public squares. The famed Jemaa el-Fnaa square is a centerpiece of the city, filled with storytellers, musicians, and food vendors, creating a thrilling blend of sounds, smells, and colors. Visitors are drawn to the beautiful Bahia Palace, the intricate Saadian Tombs, and the stunning gardens of Jardin Majorelle. The city’s medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a labyrinth of narrow alleys filled with traditional artisans and spices, making it an unforgettable cultural experience.

Tangier offers a unique charm as a port city where Europe meets Africa, with views of the Strait of Gibraltar and easy access to the Spanish coast. It is the principal city of northern Morocco, famous for being an important port and trade center, and having excellent road and rail connections with several important cities, such as Casablanca. The Kasbah Museum, housed in a former sultan’s palace, showcases Morocco’s rich history and artistic legacy, while the medina’s winding streets reveal historic mosques, local markets, and cafés. With its coastal promenades and panoramic viewpoints like Cape Spartel, Tangier provides a mix of history, culture, and natural beauty, being located at just 14 km away from Europe.

Chefchaouen, often called the “Blue Pearl” of Morocco, is a picturesque mountain town famous for its blue-washed buildings and tranquil atmosphere. Located in the Rif Mountains, the town’s medina is a charming maze of blue and white buildings, creating a serene and visually captivating environment. This peaceful town is a popular destination for photographers, hikers, and travelers seeking a relaxed experience away from larger cities. Chefchaouen’s unique color palette, combined with its local artisan shops, handicrafts, and Moroccan textiles, make it a beloved spot for those looking to experience a slower pace and the natural beauty of Morocco.

Transportation

Transportation included to and from airports if arriving/departing at the designated times. Program activity transportation is included.

Airports

Students will need to arrange and purchase flights from Cleveland to Marrakech and Tangier to Cleveland. 

Details on when to arrive and depart will be provided soon.

Students will stay in double-occupancy hotel rooms in Morocco, where daily breakfasts will be included.

Some meals for the program are included at the hotel (daily breakfast) and as a group (Welcome Dinner and Cooking Class). All other meals are the responsibility of the student.
