Possible Power Interruptions on Kent Campus on Veterans Day Holiday

The Kent Campus may experience power interruptions due to turbine testing on Friday, Nov. 11.

ɫҹ generates a large portion of the power used on the Kent Campus. The university will be testing the turbines to check on the reliability and operation of control and distribution systems. This exercise tests the turbines’ ability to power the Kent Campus without being connected to the Ohio Edison power grid.

Frank Renovich, associate director of energy operations, says the testing was scheduled for Veterans Day because the university will be closed.

“The impact, if any, should be minimal,” Renovich says. “The electric power and steam consumptions will be low during this particular day.”

The test is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and will last roughly two hours. If the test is unsuccessful, the Kent Campus may experience a brief power outage that will last approximately five minutes while the university switches back to district power.

Kent Campus employees are asked to take precautions by shutting off all computers and any unnecessary electronic devices before leaving for the day on Thursday, Nov. 10, prior to the holiday.

Questions should be directed to Renovich at 330-672-0775 or frenovi2@kent.edu.
