Daniel Reith
Biography
Daniel Reith was appointed Assistant Conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra and Music Director of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra (COYO) by Franz Welser-M枚st starting in the 2022-23 season. As Assistant Conductor, Mr. Reith leads Severance Music Center and Blossom Music Festival subscription concerts and provides assistance to Mr. Welser-M枚st. He鈥檚 also actively involved with the Orchestra鈥檚 many education programs and community performances, including his role as music director of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra. In this position, Mr. Reith oversees the ensemble鈥檚 artistic planning, selects personnel for the ensemble, and leads rehearsals and performances of the Youth Orchestra.
Mr. Reith was the 2019 winner of Opptakt, Talent Norway鈥檚 program for fostering young conductors, and he has since established himself as a talent on the Nordic orchestral scene with a string of promising debuts and returns, including the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, and the Norwegian Armed Forces. In 2022, Mr. Reith made his debuts with the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra and Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. He also served as the Assistant Conductor at the Norwegian Opera for a production of Orpheus in the Underworld.
Well-versed in a wide range of repertoire, Mr. Reith has a special interest in the German repertoire. This includes the classical core repertoire and more particularly, repertoire from the late romantic period. He fosters a strong dedication to reviving repertoire from this time that has been or became unknown and shares this with a current audience.
In addition to his conducting work, Mr. Reith is a talented pianist and chamber musician, having performed in concerts and competitions throughout Germany, Norway, and other countries. Mr. Reith has been awarded several scholarships in Germany, where he鈥檚 worked with orchestras such as the Hamburg Philharmonic and Neubrandenburg Philharmonic.
Mr. Reith grew up in B眉hl, Germany, and studied music in his home country as well as Norway. He received bachelor鈥檚 degrees in Piano from Freiburg鈥檚 Academy of Music and the Norwegian Academy of Music. He also received a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Music Theory at Freiburg鈥檚 Academy of Music, followed by a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Conducting at Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts. In 2021, he received his master鈥檚 degree in Conducting at the Norwegian Academy of Music.
