Biological Sciences Department-14150

Gifts to this program allow the Chair to allocate resources where they can have the most benefit. It allows us to take advantage of new and time-sensitive opportunities or even create new programming for students and faculty. This fund supports efforts such as:

  • Travel funding for undergraduate & graduate students
  • Pilot funding for innovative research projects
  • Support for critical research infrastructure within the department
Herrick Chair in Biology-14150

This program supports the J. Arthur Margaret Hatton Herrick Endowed Chair in Plant Conservation Biology and helps to provide competitive research compensation and research support for this position.

Undergraduate Awards

Clinton and Olive Hobbs Scholarship in Plant Science-14154  

This fund supports a scholarship for students pursuring baccalaureate or graduate degree in Biology or Botany, preferably with an interest in green plants.  The scholarship is awarded according to academic merit and financial need. Recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA.  Preference will be given to non-traditional, full-time female students at least 30 years old.  The scholarship is renewable for a maximum of four years.

The Dorothy J. Stuhlmiller Scholarship in Biology (14154)

This fund supports a scholarship for sophomore or higher undergraduates with financial need. Preference for students from the northeast Ohio counties of: Columbiana, Cuyahoga, Mahoning, Portage, Stark, or Summit. Preference for diversity of student recipients.  Recipients of this scholarship are encouraged to 鈥減ay it forward鈥; to do good works and/or acts of kindness, in order to repay the good that has happened to them. The funds are directed towards tuition, fees, room and board, books, and other education expenses related to securing, maintaining, and completing a department-approved student internship.

Dr. & Mrs. Robert W. Squires Endowed Scholarship (19948)  

This fund supports a scholarship for undergraduate students studying environmental microbiology, biotechnology, or similar field with preference given to biotechnology majors.  Recipients must have and maintain a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale and the funds will support tuition.

Dr. G. Dennis Cooke and Dr. Barbara Andreas Scholarship in Biological Sciences (14166)   

This fund supports a scholarship for sophomore (or higher) undergraduate students pursuing a BS  degree in Botany or in Environmental and Conservation Biology. Recipients must have an overall minimum accumulated grade point average of at least a 3.0 and the same in their major.  Award is renewable for one additional year with maintenance of criteria.

Dr. Gary B. Larkin Endowed Undergraduate Scholarship in Biological Sciences (14166)

This fund supports a scholarship for junior or senior undergraduate students majoring in Biological Sciences who have demonstrated the capacity to achieve academic excellence.

Dr. Harold R. Papiska Scholarship in Biological Sciences (13981)

This fund supports a scholarship for junior or senior undergraduate students majoring in Biological Science who have demonstrated the capacity to achieve educational and professional goals.

James A. Rinier Scholarship in Biological Sciences (13984) 

This fund supports a scholarship for full-time junior or senior undergraduate students who are conservation majors; must have a GPA of 3.5 in major and 3.0 overall; must be a US citizen.

Biological Sciences Pre-Medicine Scholarship Endowment (19236)    

This fund supports a scholarship for senior students majoring in biological sciences who demonstrated evidenced of superior scholarship and academic achievement in pre-medical studies.  BSCI Biology or Zoology major.  GPA 3.5 overall and 3.5 in major.

Graduate Scholarship

The Dr. Robert E. Carlson Scholarship in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (34192)   

This fund supports the academic success of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology graduate students by providing funds for travel, conference fees, and other expenses related to conference attendance.
