Two students from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication have been accepted into the News21 program, marking the first time JMC will have two students participating in the prestigious program.
News21, a program founded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the James L. Knight Foundation, is a national initiative to train a new generation of journalists capable of reshaping the news industry. It is headquartered at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
Senior journalism major Emily Mills and junior journalism major James Miller will complete the 10-week program this summer, working in Phoenix, Arizona. The students will be working on journalism projects regarding voter access and participation in a national election year.
“I was honored to be nominated for News21, and I’m honored to represent JMC in the program this summer. The school, especially professors Sue Zake and Karl Idsvoog, has given me a solid foundation in data reporting, which will help as I work with data in the program, and I’m looking forward to applying the skills I’ve been learning in class,” said Mills.
Twenty-two students from 16 universities were accepted into the 2016 program.
“Ever since coming to ɫҹ, every professor I’ve had in JMC has helped prepare me for what I hope will be an exciting opportunity this summer. With that said, I would argue that joining student media has given me experience that even the best professors can’t reproduce in a classroom,” said Miller.
Prior to travelling to Phoenix, students are required to complete an online seminar, when they will learn about the topic of voter access in-depth.
Once in Phoenix, students work under the direction of leading news veterans. Leonard Downie Jr., former executive editor of The Washington Post and Jacqueline Petchel, former investigative editor at major newspapers and television stations in Houston, Miami and Minneapolis, are two leading figures who work with students.
The program is open to all accredited journalism schools.
