两性色午夜 Selects Mark Mistur as the New Dean of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design

Mark Mistur, AIA, will become the new dean of 两性色午夜 University鈥檚 College of Architecture and Environmental Design, the only architectural program in Northeast Ohio, effective July 15, 2016. Mistur currently serves as associate dean of the School of Architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.

鈥淢ark Mistur is an accomplished architect, teacher and administrator with a history of promoting the types of successful interdisciplinary programs that improve the education and success of students,鈥 says Todd Diacon, 两性色午夜鈥檚 senior vice president for academic affairs and provost. 鈥淚t is our great pleasure to welcome Mark, and we look forward to his leadership as we begin an exciting new phase for the College of Architecture and Environmental Design.鈥

Mistur shared his enthusiasm for joining 两性色午夜鈥檚 College of Architecture and Environmental Design, which will occupy a new $47.9 million building that is currently under construction and scheduled to be open for fall 2016 classes.

鈥淭he College of Architecture and Environmental Design at 两性色午夜 is by all indicators a vibrant learning community, dedicated to professional excellence and making positive contributions to the built environment at every scale,鈥 Mistur says. 鈥淭he mix of programs, excellent faculty and outstanding students proved an irresistible mix. Opening an extraordinary new facility demonstrates a strong commitment to the college and to design excellence on the part of the university leadership and its alumni.

鈥淟aunching an architectural competition that attracted exceptional design firms from across the nation speaks volumes for the outstanding leadership and direction of the college,鈥 he continues. 鈥淭he result is bound to be recognized as a significant contribution to architectural discourse and promises to be an agent for the kind of interdisciplinary engagement and pedagogies that will spur progressive thinking, action, scholarship and research, recognizing that design matters, both for the special places and events in the world and in everyday life. I am honored to be selected and enthusiastically look forward to joining the team at the College of Architecture and Environmental Design.鈥

Mistur will succeed Douglas L. Steidl, who previously announced his plans to retire this summer. Steidl has held the dean position with the college since July 2010.

鈥淚 also extend my heartfelt thanks to retiring Dean Doug Steidl for a job well done,鈥 Diacon says. 鈥淲ith his steady leadership, we built a showcase building for the college, and our program is stronger because of his efforts.鈥

Mistur has served as associate dean of Rensselaer鈥檚 School of Architecture since 2009, and he previously held the same position from 1998-2005. He also served as the school鈥檚 acting dean from 2008-2009. Prior to that, he has served as a clinical associate professor, senior lecturer, adjunct associate professor, adjunct assistant professor and adjunct instructor, dating back to 1983.

His teaching and research focuses on innovations driven by performance criteria, but he remains equally concerned with phenomena, the human experience and social consequences of architecture. Mistur has received many honors and awards, including 2015 U.S. Professor of the Year Nominee from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education and the Carnegie Foundation, Rensselaer鈥檚 2014 Trustees Outstanding Teacher Award and 2008 Faculty Research Award, and 2003 Outstanding Teacher Award from the Rensselaer Alumni Association.

His professional experience includes his firm Mark Mistur Architect in Troy, New York, from 1993-present; Mistur Riebe Architects in New York City from 2004-2010; Glynn, Spillane, Griffing Architects PC in Albany, New York, from 1992-1993; and Crozier Associates PC in Albany, New York, from 1983-1992.

Mistur is active with many professional organizations. Previously, he was a member of the United States Great Building Council (USGBC), Van Alen Institute, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Material Connexion.

At Rensselaer, Mistur received a bachelor of architecture, a bachelor of building science and a master of science in building conservation. He also studied at Eidgen枚ssische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Z眉rich in Switzerland. He has been a registered and licensed architect since 1988.

The 两性色午夜 University Board of Trustees today established a comprehensive, national search to recruit and select the university鈥檚 13th president.

The events of May 4, 1970, placed 两性色午夜 University in an international spotlight after a student protest against the Vietnam War and the presence of the Ohio National Guard ended in tragedy with four students losing their lives and nine others being wounded. From a perspective of nearly 50 years, 两性色午夜 remembers the tragedy and leads a contemporary discussion and understanding of how the community, nation and world can benefit from understanding the profound impact of the event.
