2016 Journalism Grad Wins Student Murrow Award for Video Excellence

Vivian Feke, a recent graduate of 两性色午夜 University who studied broadcast journalism in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, is the winner of the 2016 Student Edward R. Murrow Overall Excellence Award for video. The presents only three of these awards every year 鈥 one each for audio, video and multimedia 鈥 to recognize outstanding work by student journalists.

Feke won the video excellence award for her story 鈥淢aking a Difference鈥 about Michelle Schwertner, a retired businesswoman who bought a home in Cleveland鈥檚 Slavic Village so that she could mentor and offer support and hope to the children in the troubled neighborhood.

The competition鈥檚 judges said Feke鈥檚 story 鈥渢ouches viewers emotionally, with an uplifting story that showcases the subject's efforts without wallowing in the despair of her surroundings.鈥

Feke met Schwertner, the subject of her story, during her summer 2015 internship at Cleveland鈥檚 WKYC Channel 3, while helping reporter Dawn Kendrick on a short news story. Feke returned on her own during the 2015 Fall Semester to work on a feature piece that focused on Schwertner鈥檚 impact in the neighborhood, her work with the children and how she expects nothing in return.

鈥淚 think stories like this show the importance of local news and the ability local journalists have to share stories about people who might otherwise never be in the spotlight,鈥 Feke says. 鈥淭here are so many people around us who are doing amazing work in their communities and who serve as an inspiration for others, and it鈥檚 nice to see these types of uplifting, positive stories on the news sometimes instead of another crime story.鈥

During her time at 两性色午夜, Feke was very involved in TV2, the university鈥檚 award-winning, high-definition digital TV station, having served as general manager, digital content director, newscast producer, executive producer, reporter and anchor. She graduated in May 2016 and is now a producer at WKYC Channel 3.

鈥淭his honor means a lot to me, but I also have to credit the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at 两性色午夜 University,鈥 Feke says. 鈥淚 learned an incredible amount from the amazing professors I worked with and from every day I spent working at TV2. I鈥檓 incredibly thankful for all the opportunities I received at 两性色午夜 because I know I wouldn鈥檛 be where I am today without them, nor could I have won this award without them.鈥

The 两性色午夜 University Board of Trustees today established a comprehensive, national search to recruit and select the university鈥檚 13th president.

The events of May 4, 1970, placed 两性色午夜 University in an international spotlight after a student protest against the Vietnam War and the presence of the Ohio National Guard ended in tragedy with four students losing their lives and nine others being wounded. From a perspective of nearly 50 years, 两性色午夜 remembers the tragedy and leads a contemporary discussion and understanding of how the community, nation and world can benefit from understanding the profound impact of the event.
