Campus Partners With NAACP, ACDL on “Black History and Me” Art & Writing Contest

Contest is open to all students in Ashtabula County (pre-K to College)

The ɫҹ University at Ashtabula Library and Associate Professor of Sociology Jessica Leveto, Ph.D. are partnering with the Ashtabula NAACP and the Ashtabula County District Library to present “Black History and Me”, an art and writing contest celebrating Black excellence and innovation.  The contest is open to all students in Ashtabula County, from pre-K through college.

Winners are eligible for cash prizes, publication and exhibition. Select works will be published in a cross-collaboration open access journal developed and hosted by the ɫҹ Ashtabula Library. Deadline for submission is March 12, 2021.

According to the contest rules, entries can be poetry, essay, short story, spoken word, cross-genre, graphic design, photography, performative or creative video, posters, drawings or other original pieces of artwork. 

“I’m excited to see the creativity of the community,” Leveto said. “We know that there’s a lot of talent in the community that doesn’t get showcased enough, and so around a topic as important as this, we’re really excited to see what comes in.”

Submissions can be submitted digitally to naacpashtabula@gmail.com or physically dropped off at the Ashtabula County District Library from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. between March 10-12.

Contest winners will be announced on Juneteenth (June 19, 2021).
